There are various categories of cosmetic surgery performed on the breasts (also called mammoplasty): breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast reconstruction and nipple correction surgeries.
Cosmetic surgery involves procedures that are designed to enhance or improve the appearance of the breasts. This can include breast augmentation, which involves the use of implants to increase the size of the breasts, or breast reduction, which involves removing excess tissue to reduce the size of the breasts. Other cosmetic procedures may include breast lift surgery, which can help to lift and reshape sagging breasts, or nipple and areola reconstruction, which can restore the appearance of the nipples and areolas.
Reconstructive surgery, on the other hand, is designed to restore the shape and appearance of the breasts after breast cancer treatment. This can include breast reconstruction surgery, which involves rebuilding the breast tissue that has been removed during a mastectomy. There are several different types of breast reconstruction surgery, including implant-based reconstruction and autologous reconstruction, which uses the patient’s own tissue to rebuild the breast.
Breast reconstruction surgery can be performed at the same time as a mastectomy, or it can be done later, after the patient has had time to heal. The timing of the surgery will depend on a number of factors, including the stage of the cancer, the patient’s overall health, and the patient’s personal preferences.
One of the benefits of breast reconstruction surgery is that it can help to restore a woman’s sense of femininity and self-confidence.
