Gynecomastia is an increase in the amount of breast tissue in boys or men, caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. It can affect one or both breasts. Generally, gynecomastia is not a serious problem, but most of the time it is distressing and can be difficult to cope with affecting your confidence.
The cause of gynecomastia is not always clear, but it can be due to hormonal imbalances, certain medications, or certain medical conditions. It can also be a side effect of anabolic steroid use.
Symptoms of gynecomastia may include swelling or tenderness in the breast tissue, and the breasts may appear larger or more prominent than usual. In some cases, the condition may resolve on its own, but it can also persist for an extended period of time.
Treatment for gynecomastia may not be necessary if the condition is mild and not causing any discomfort or embarrassment. However, if the condition is causing distress or interfering with daily activities, treatment options may include medication, surgery, or a combination of both. Medications that may be used to treat gynecomastia include hormone therapy, such as testosterone replacement, or medications that block the effects of estrogen. Surgery to remove the breast tissue may also be an option, although it is generally reserved for severe cases or cases that do not respond to other treatments.
It is important to work with a healthcare provider to determine the best treatment approach for gynecomastia. With proper treatment, the condition can often be effectively managed or resolved.
